Identity misuse and scams

If your NIN or BVN has been misused

Steps to take straight away if someone has used your identity without you.

Act now, in this order. The first steps stop further damage; the rest build your case.

  1. If you got a Verath alert for it, tap "Not me" first. It takes seconds and tells the institution that ran the check straight away. See Disputing a check.
  2. Call your bank. Use the number on your card or in its official app. Ask it to block or review new accounts, loans, transfers or changes to your details.
  3. Secure your SIM. Contact your mobile network, ask about any recent SIM swap or replacement, and set or change your SIM PIN. Whoever controls your number can receive your one-time codes. See SIM swap and changing your phone or email.
  4. Change your passwords and PINs for banking, email and any app linked to your phone number.
  5. Report the fraud to the appropriate authorities and keep every reference number you are given.
  6. Keep a record as you go: dates, institutions, amounts, and who you spoke to.

Never share your NIN, BVN, PINs or one-time codes with anyone who contacts you, even if they say they are from your bank or from Verath. See Protecting yourself from identity scams.
