Identity misuse and scams

Protecting yourself from identity scams

Common tricks used to get your NIN, BVN or codes, and how to avoid them.

Most identity fraud starts with someone getting your number, your face or your SIM. Watch for:

  • Calls or messages asking for codes. No genuine bank, agent or Verath staff member will ask for a one-time code, PIN or password.
  • "Update your BVN" links. Only use your bank's official app or branch.
  • Photos of your NIN slip or ID. Share them only when you must, and never in group chats.
  • Unexpected SIM problems. If your phone suddenly loses network, contact your mobile network at once; it can be a sign of a SIM swap.

Verath will never

  • ask for your password, PIN or a one-time code by phone, email or chat;
  • ask you to pay to "unlock" an alert or a dispute;
  • message you from a personal number.

Our emails come from addresses ending in @verath.io or @mail.verath.io.
