Why it matters
Your identity number is used in places you never see.
Your NIN and BVN are 11-digit numbers that have been printed on slips, typed into dozens of KYC forms and, in some cases, exposed in data breaches. With that number and a matching face or a compromised SIM, someone can try to open accounts, take loans or register SIMs in your name.
Today, owners are generally not told when their number is looked up. Most people find out months later, from a debt collector or a frozen account.
How it works
How Identity Monitoring works
- 1
Enroll and prove it’s you
Sign up and prove you own your NIN (with a Virtual NIN generated for Verath) and your BVN (with a one-time code), plus a selfie liveness check.
- 2
Partners send privacy-preserving events
When a connected verification partner checks an identity number, it sends Verath a keyed hash of the number, not the number itself.
- 3
You get an alert
If the hash matches your enrolled identity, Verath alerts you by app push, WhatsApp, SMS or email with the institution, purpose and time.
- 4
Confirm or dispute
Tap “This was me” or “Not me”. A dispute is sent to the institution’s fraud team with the event reference, and you get guided next steps.

FAQ
Questions, answered
Does Verath see every NIN or BVN lookup in Nigeria?
No. Verath can only alert you about checks reported by partners connected to our network. Coverage will grow as more verification providers, credit bureaus and institutions connect. We will always be clear about which sources are connected.
Does Verath store my NIN or BVN?
Verath is designed so identity numbers are never stored in plain form. Matching uses keyed hashes, and the one encrypted copy needed for re-keying is held in a dedicated key vault.
Can I monitor someone else’s identity?
No. You must prove you own an identity before it can be monitored. Family monitoring, when available, will require the relative’s own recorded consent.
Will basic alerts be free?
Our plan is for basic alerts to be free for individuals. Premium features such as family monitoring and full reports may be paid.
