Getting started

How Verath works

The four steps from enrolment to an alert, and how your number stays private along the way.

  1. You enrol and prove the identity is yours. You add your NIN and/or BVN and prove you own them, so nobody can monitor someone else's identity.
  2. Partners report checks privately. When a connected institution checks an identity number, it sends Verath a scrambled code (a keyed hash) made from the number, not the number itself.
  3. Verath matches and alerts you. If the code matches your enrolled identity, Verath alerts you with the institution, the purpose and the time.
  4. You confirm or dispute. Tap This was me or Not me. A dispute goes to the institution that ran the check.

Why partners never learn who you are

Each partner uses its own secret key to make the code, so the same NIN produces a different code for every partner. Partners cannot combine their records to track you, and a partner never sees who an alert went to. If a check doesn't match anyone enrolled, Verath stores nothing about it.
